ACADEMIC RETAIL

Considered second nature to our 21st Century community, retail is now intertwined with even our most basic experiences. Retail shopping offers the possibility for exploring stimulating new destinations and products, creating a casual social pastime. Unfortunately, not all retail experiences are memorable, especially those with academic backgrounds. Enquiry centres tend to lack imagination, and an eccentric ‘brandscape’ that truly reflects their brand, values, and identity. Their interiors are often very authoritarian, which creates an intimidating first impression, especially for those wanting to join the academic family.

DJCAD and University of Dundee’s Enquiry Centre lacks the ability to communicate the true creativity and uniqueness of the institution. With a bland and generic interior, it has a problem with engaging the outside community. In response to this issue,  a new design was conceived. It works to grab the attention of all ages, capturing the idea that anyone can be a student.

Using  ‘connection’ as the main design force, the space symbolizes the journeys and relationships formed in art school. The furniture replicates an installation; linked, and meandering across the floor. Thus, the welcome, peruse and meeting areas are harmoniously intertwined. The niches were created through a spatial analysis of the Bauhaus primary shapes- triangles and squares, mixing the numerous abstract linear structures with the ability to seat a variety of group sizes. The columns were added to dismiss the stereotypical  ‘welcome’ desk, allowing the staff to casually lean on them. To display information, the ceiling is used as a projected installation. Consisting of protruding triangle screens displaying course videos, the clients can use headsets to listen, and lounge in their niches. The design was immesnely inspired by the Paris Comme des Garçons store, designed by AB Rogers Design. The interior is vibrantly monochrome. Using a primary DJCAD colour, the entire interior is a shiny red, but contrasted with white flooring; making the space modern and exciting.  The reflective materials highlight the fact that the University welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds.
