personal project.
Meaning “people of the islands” in the native Taino indian language, Lukku Cairi is an eco-resort and educational centre, housed at The Island School, in Eleuthera, The Bahamas.
A response to the expansion of environmentally harmful cruise liner tourism in The Bahamas, Lukku Cairi was designed to invite people of all ages to immerse themselves in authentic
Bahamian culture, instead of synthetic island experiences created by foreign cruise companies. The Island School, famous for offering transformative educational journeys and focusing on living sustainably a national reserve recently bought over by Disney cruises to develop a cultureless and polluted resort, Eleuthera and The Island School offered a perfect site for the expansion of sustainable and local
ecotourism initiatives.

Lukku Cairi offers a getaway for visitors to learn about Bahamian arts, food, and culture, along with engaging in The Island School’s educational eco-activities with students and staff. Inspired by mangroves, a species of aquatic plants
that protect the coastlines, and provide habitats for thousands of animals, and Junkanoo, a colourful Bahamian festival, the site consists of three contemporary overwater bungalows, a main multi-use pavilion, and an overwater exercise area. With a mixture of local materials, colourful Bahamian palettes, hydro and aquaponics, and sustainable energy collection, Lukku Cairi shows how we can live well in our environment, whilst maintaining exciting and
vibrant design.
